The Buildings, Roads and General Services Authority (BRAGSA) says its teams have been working across the country since Saturday, 9th November, 2024, to clean up communities which were affected by the passage of a tropical wave over the weekend.
Chief Technical Officer with BRAGSA responsible for the Engineering Department that deals with operations, maintenance and projects, Natoya Thomas, says the agency received reports of landslides, flooding, blocked drains and other issues, as a result of Friday’s heavy rains. She says teams were mobilized on Saturday, to begin addressing them.
"With the first set of heavy rains on Friday, we would have received a number of complaints about landslides and blocked drains. The majority of these reports came from the Windward side, the central region including West Saint George, East Saint George, Marriaqua, East Kingstown also in Bequia. We also received reports of few landslides in South Leeward so with those reports our team had been on the ground from Saturday to begin those assessments and cleanup; we would have started some cleanup on Saturday".
According to Thomas, while the rains continued on Saturday and Sunday, cleanup activities across the country are continuing, following an extensive amount of landslides.
"Now while were cleaning up we had the second set of rains and we had a lot more landslides happening and what the team tried to do, we tried to ensure that the major roads are passable, so we would have tried to clear one lane like on the Vigie Highway and so forth that was completely blocked off. And as a matter of fact, we have already mobilized equipment, the teams are out, and we have begun clearing of the landslides and those blocked drains".
